Commenting on the Audit Scotland report, 'Improving Energy Efficiency', Liberal Democrat Energy spokesman Liam McArthur said:
"This report should be a real eye-opener for the Scottish Government. Over seventy per cent of public sector buildings have the worst energy efficiency ratings.
"This is nowhere near good enough.
"Energy use has actually increased since 2006/07, despite countless warm words from Ministers about cutting down.
"And spending on energy in the public sector has gone up 21% in the same time. That's £54 million more of public money spent on energy, when Scottish Ministers delight in telling businesses and individuals how to cut their bills.
"The Scottish Government have been far too slow to play their part. The Energy Efficiency Action Plan was promised since 2007 but only published 2 months ago.
"The Government should be at the forefront of providing advice and support to public bodies so that they can reduce energy use.
"We all agree better energy efficiency is vital for the public finances and the environment, but the SNP seem unwilling or unable to do what is necessary."
