Commenting on Scotland's PISA figures published today, comparing education to other OECD countries, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:
"While Scotland seems to compare well to other developed nations, there is still room for improvement.
"As Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) was introduced this year, everyone with an interest in education is anxiously waiting to see how this affects Scotland's global standing in the years ahead.
"Literacy in Scotland leaves something to be desired. As a first step, trainee teachers must be properly equipped with essential skills in spelling and numeracy whilst at university or college."
