Borders MP Michael Moore has criticised the Government after figures published today revealed that unemployment in the Borders and around Scotland rose again last month, despite the UK technically moving out of recession at the end of 2009.
In the Borders, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in February 2010 rose again to almost 2000 - this figure more than 10% higher than in the same month in 2009. Across Scotland as a whole, unemployment rose by nearly 1% over the last quarter.
Next week, Mr Moore will meet the Scottish Secretary with representatives of the Borders business community to discuss issues such as recent job cuts in the local manufacturing sector and the continued difficulties that small businesses have had in accessing bank lending.
Commenting, Mr Moore said
'While Ministers claim that they are investing to protect jobs, it would appear that this protection does not extend to people north of the border.
'Far from making a real difference, the Government has failed to provide Borders businesses with the support they need to keep people in work.
'It is hard to see how the Prime Minister can claim credit for any economic recovery while the number of people losing their jobs in Scotland continues to grow.'
