Today saw Liberals and Democrats from all over Europe come together to celebrate the first ever pan-European Civil Liberties Day. The event took place in the European Parliament as part of the ongoing ALDE campaign to promote civil liberties in the EU and "make the case for a proper balance between security and civil liberty".
The next stage of the campaign involves an ambitious plan to form a Europe-wide Civil Liberties Movement, similar to the American Civil Liberties Union. This aims to bring together different groups from EU Member States - working in areas such as freedom of speech, data protection, gender equality and transparency - and provide them with a single platform on which to promote civil liberties at the European-level.
