Jim Tolson, Liberal Democrat MSP for Dunfermline West, has received assurances from Directors of Nationwide that jobs at Dunfermline Building Society will be safeguarded and branches will be protected.
Liberal Democrats have called for a special meeting of the Financial Services Jobs Task Force to meet in Dunfermline. Mr Tolson has secured a commitment from Nationwide to attend this meeting.
Commenting ahead of the statement to the Scottish Parliament from the First Minister, Mr Tolson said:
"The loss of the Dunfermline as an independent Scottish financial institution is a loss for the local community that is proud to share the name of Scotland's oldest and largest building society.
"Questions remain over the deal that was done by the UK Treasury and why more wasn't done to keep the Dunfermline in Dunfermline.
"This is tempered, however, by the news that the jobs of hundreds of my constituents could be saved. Liberal Democrats have today called for the Financial Services Job Task Force to meet in special session in Dunfermline.
"I have met today with representatives of Nationwide and they have committed to attending the meeting. Liberal Democrats are now looking for the same level of commitment from the First Minister.
"Workers can rest assured that their Liberal Democrat representatives at Holyrood and Westminster will continue to fight for the brand to keep branches open and jobs safe."
